In his call for expanded science funding, Obama made several references to then-President John Kennedy's call in the early 1960s to put a man on the moon by the end of that decade. The President said a renewed funding push would allow the United States to catch and surpass other countries with breakthroughs that "will exceed the level achieved at the height of the space race."
